Harden's latest restaurant guide has named Mr Underhill's Restaurant in Ludlow as the best all-round UK restaurant outside London. It offers a seven-course daily menu for dinner. Another (local) reviewer, "Mr Pernickety," says the food is good value and probably the best in Ludlow, if not the whole of the Welsh Marches. On top of that, Mr Underhill's has already earned a Michelin star. A second Ludlow restaurant, La Becasse, also has a Michelin star. Praise indeed.

The Sunday Times (15 November 2009) recommends a winter walk, taking in Ironbridge town, the famous bridge and the River Severn, through Lloyd's Coppice and on to Coalport, with "slick food" (whatever that is) at the Malthouse in Ironbridge.

Acton
Scott Historic Farm, near Church Stretton, was the setting
for two Christmas Specials in the BBC 2 series, "Victorian
Farm." The original programmes have
been very popular and prompted a flurry of bookings for B &
Bs and self-catering cottages in the area.
-
Also being filmed at Acton Scott in October 2009 were two BBC programmes, "Escape in Time," showing families rediscovering 19th century practical skills and self-sufficiency, presented by Ben Fogle. These will be broadcast in 2010. The Farm is now closed until 30 March 2010.

An
interesting article
in the Times (8 August 2009) about the Wenlock Olympian Games,
instituted by Dr William Penny Brookes in 1850 and the inspiration
for the modern Olympics. Celebrations of Dr Penny Brookes are
currently underway. The Wenlock Olympian Games are held annually
in July.

More
accolades in the national press for Shropshire as an interesting
holiday destination: in part one of "Great things to do
..." (27 June 2009), the Guardian recommends a visit to
the Iron Bridge in Ironbridge Gorge (a few miles from
Much Wenlock), "a remarkable piece of engineering"
with a "cracking view down the Severn Gorge" and Acton
Scott Historic Farm for its "lovely tearoom, heavy
horses and silver-grey chickens." (But no mention of the
equally attractive Tamworth pigs, especially when they've got
their little pink piglets...) In September, the Guardian declared Ludlow Castle to be one of the ten best ruined castles.

Channel
Four's Time Team have been excavating at Hopton Castle
(not far from Ludlow), scene of a bloody English Civil War battle.
Tony Robinson, the presenter, said, "It's hard to imagine
a massacre in such beautiful English countryside." The
episode is due to be broadcast in 2010.

Red
kite seen over Wenlock Edge: Paul Evans, writing in the
Guardian's Country Diary, noted a red kite flying over Wenlock
Edge (March 20th). By August, they were flying over Ferndale, admiring the solar water heating tubes. They can also be seen along the Corvedale. The RSPB says these are probably Welsh kites, gradually expanding their territory.
